Google boosts AI links after 40% publisher traffic drop

Google announced Thursday it will start displaying links to websites and articles more prominently and higher up in search results powered by artificial intelligence, as brands and news publishers warn of a sharp decline in their traffic. The changes, announced on October 15, 2026, include more visible inline links, dedicated sections for official websites, expanded news carousels, and clickable profiles for publishers and creators.

According to a report by consultancy Chartbeat, news website publishers saw a 40% drop in traffic coming from Google between July 2025 and July 2026. The move comes as the search giant faces mounting pressure from content creators and publishers who depend on referral traffic for revenue.

Enhanced Link Visibility Across AI Features
Contextual links will now be featured “more frequently” and higher up in AI-generated search content. Google will also make links displayed at the end of AI-generated summaries “more engaging and prominent” for users who want to “dig deeper”.
These links will feature image thumbnails and a more prominent design, encouraging users to explore related articles and additional perspectives. The redesign applies to both AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google’s two AI-powered search features.
Global Expansion of News Carousels
Google will also expand worldwide its link “carousel,” a set of cards displayed directly below AI Overviews that show headlines with images for relevant articles. The algorithm will prioritize articles from sites a user has previously identified as “preferred sources,” and it will also be able to pull in content from relevant social media posts and other forums.
These carousels are designed to surface original reporting and diverse perspectives directly beneath AI-generated summaries, giving users faster access to full articles without scrolling past the AI response.
Evolution of Google’s AI Search Features
In May 2024, Google launched AI Overviews, where Google generates summarized answers to search queries, rather than only showing links as it historically did. Then in March 2025, Google added AI Mode, which opens in a separate window and provides a more comprehensive answer and more links than AI Overviews.
In its second-quarter 2025 results, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said that AI Overviews had more than 2 billion monthly users in over 200 countries. Despite this massive adoption, the feature has created tension with publishers and content creators.
Impact on Publishers and Click-Through Rates
Several studies have shown that replacing traditional search with AI summaries significantly reduces the rate at which users open the suggested links. When users receive answers directly in AI-generated summaries, they often have less incentive to click through to the original sources.

The 40% traffic decline reported by Chartbeat represents a significant blow to news organizations that rely on search engine referrals for audience growth and advertising revenue. Publishers have raised concerns about whether AI summaries undermine the economics of journalism by reducing the value of original reporting.
Balancing Innovation and Publisher Relationships
Google’s latest changes appear designed to address publisher concerns while maintaining the user experience benefits of AI-powered search. By making links more prominent and expanding features like preferred sources and news carousels, the company is attempting to preserve pathways to original content.
The updates also include clickable profiles for publishers and creators, which could help build brand recognition even when users consume information through AI summaries. The dedicated sections for official websites may similarly help direct users to authoritative sources.
The timing of these changes is significant, as Google continues to face scrutiny over its relationship with news publishers and the broader impact of AI on the information ecosystem. Publishers in France and other markets have negotiated agreements with Google over content usage, and the sharp traffic declines documented by Chartbeat add urgency to these discussions.
