Anthropic merges Cowork into Claude; launches Docs & Slides

Anthropic announced on September 16, 2026 that it is discontinuing Claude Cowork as a standalone product and merging its capabilities into the main Claude chat interface. The change eliminates the need for users to decide whether a task requires the conversational assistant or a separate workspace for longer-running projects. Alongside the merger, Anthropic introduced two new beta features, Claude Docs and Claude Slides, allowing users to create and edit documents and presentations directly within conversations.

The merger comes only eight months after Anthropic introduced Cowork as a research preview on January 12, 2026. At launch, it appeared as a Claude Max feature in the macOS desktop application, bringing the agentic pattern of Claude Code to nontechnical work by taking the agentic architecture behind Claude Code and exposing it to people who did not live in a terminal.

Unified Experience Replaces Separate Modes

Starting September 16, Claude can determine how much work a request requires and use the capabilities previously associated with Cowork directly from a normal conversation. Routing happens per request rather than per tab. Users can begin with a quick question and seamlessly transition the same conversation into a multi-step project, with Claude autonomously drawing on the necessary context, skills, and connectors.

In its announcement, Anthropic said, “We built Cowork as a separate place for bigger work, and Design for visual work.” The company has now integrated these capabilities into a single interface, allowing Claude to handle tasks ranging from brief queries to complex projects that continue running even after users close their devices.

New Document and Presentation Tools

The update introduces Claude Docs and Claude Slides, both in beta for paid plans. Claude Docs is a document where users and Claude write together, allowing users to add sections, ask questions and leave comments, while Claude Slides drafts presentations that users can edit, present from inside Claude, or download as PowerPoint or PDF. Both live at a shareable link, and Docs can be exported to Microsoft Word or Google Docs.

Claude can ask clarifying questions, continue working while the user is away and return both the document and presentation from the same underlying conversation, keeping the two outputs aligned. This integration allows users to create coordinated materials, such as a research report and corresponding slide deck, from a single conversation thread.

Rollout Timeline and Plan Availability

Anthropic is initially rolling out the unified experience to Claude Pro and Max subscribers across web, desktop and mobile over the coming weeks. Team and Free plans are set to follow, with enterprise administrators given at least 30 days’ notice. Claude Docs, Claude Slides and the Design integration are in beta on paid plans.

According to Anthropic’s announcement, all existing chats, projects, artifacts, connectors, and skills remain accessible in the same locations following the merger. The company emphasized continuity for users transitioning from the separate Cowork experience to the unified interface.

Design Integration Moves Into Conversations

Along with the Cowork merger and new productivity tools, Anthropic has integrated Claude Design into standard conversations. This change means users no longer need to switch to a dedicated design mode for visual work. Claude Design now works inside conversations, allowing users to draft reports, presentations and visuals in one place.

The consolidation reflects Anthropic’s strategy to reduce friction between different modes and task types. By letting Claude automatically determine the appropriate level of assistance and autonomy, the company aims to create a more seamless experience for users working on diverse projects within a single session.

Background on Claude Code and Cowork Origins

The company had observed developers using Claude Code for decidedly non-developer work, including vacation research, slide creation, email cleanup and other general-purpose tasks, and packaged the same delegation model behind a graphical interface. This observation informed the decision to create Cowork, bringing agentic capabilities to users without technical backgrounds.

With the merger, Anthropic is essentially returning to a unified product while retaining the agentic capabilities that made Cowork distinct. Claude Code remains a separate offering focused on development workflows, while the main Claude interface now incorporates the project-based and autonomous work patterns that characterized Cowork.
