Disruptive Thinking: You Need it. How to get it...

mike-gingerich-podcast-halftime-mike 2016

There's power in disruptive thinking!

Too often we get "stuck" in small-minded, inside the box thinking in business and life.

We do the same things, follow the same routines....and yet expect better results!

It's "stinkin' thinkin'!"  What we often need is a way to get "out of the box".

In this episode I dive into four areas that can help you engage in disruptive thinking, why you need disruptive thinking, and how it can impact your business, leadership, and life.

Disruptive Thinking: You Need it. How to get it...

Disruptive thinking.  It's about breaking free from the confines of routine thinking and getting a new larger perspective.

Too often "disruptive" is seen as something negative.  Look at the examples below..."disruptive and delinquent children" and "breaking a disruptive techology into the market is never easy."  Both have negatives in the examples including "delinquent" and "never easy."

disruptive defined

However, disruptive can also be GOOD.

I like to think of "disruptive thinking" as getting "out-of-the-box", breaking routine thinking.  It's about gaining new, fresh perspective and seeing things from another angle or in another light.  In business it's moving from simply working "in" your business to working "on your business."

It is where innovation and the "lightbulb" moments occur.

It's needed because otherwise we tend to do the same things over and over, and see things from the same perspective.

So how can you break out and get some Disruptive Thinking? I outline four ways and you gotta listen to get the rich details!

1. Travel

  • Go Cross cultural
  • Attend Conferences and events (sessions can help broaden your perspective!)
  • Simply getting out of the office
  • Touring a Plant, Facility

2. Connection

  • Listening to other people over a beverage
  • Conferences and Event networking with focus on listening (what happens between sessions may be more important than what the speaker says!)
  • "Never eat lunch alone" is a good concept to explore!

3. Art & Media

  • Watch Movies
  • Listen to Music
  • Attend Plays & Productions

4. Serve

  • Taking time to volunteer
  • To give of your time to a cause
  • To offer help to those in need

What happens when you get outside your normal zone is that you begin to be free from the limitations of the "normal" and can see things freshly.  A movie may inspire you, music may move you and the end result is that you can think about your life and business with fresh perspective.

Crossing the Bridge:

I call it "crossing the bridge."  Application of Disruptive Thinking is when you apply new insights to your present realities.

You experience something somewhere else, then you think about your life and business and apply perspective "gained on the other side" to your present reality. You adapt the concepts to your situation, effectively "crossing the bridge" to apply what was gained from being outside your zone to your zone.  The end new result is Disruptive Thinking!

Why the Halftime theme Mike?

I’m an Indiana Hoosier native where basketball is the top sport. Every team heads to the locker room at halftime to evaluate the first half and create a updated plan for the second half. That plan includes adjustments based on reviewing what worked and what didn't. The “halftime” is a key review point where the game stops, the team pulls away to huddle in the locker room away from the fans, and they come out prepared and ready to succeed in the second half.

That’s what this podcast is all about, taking the time to pull away for a bit to evaluate, learn, and set some strategies for your business to succeed in the second half. Join me by subscribing and let me be your “business halftime” to help you find great success going forward!
