Make Progress not Perfection!

Too many great ideas never reach the public and have the impact they could because leaders fail to adhere to this productivity principle: Make progress, not perfection!

Make progress, not perfection

I believe that perfection is the great enemy of innovation, entrepreneurship, and progress, both in life and business.  Far too often we get "stuck" on the final 10% we think is needed when in reality it is totally good enough to be released and launched!  We've got to stop it and it takes personal self-awareness and business acumen to recognize this and move beyond it.  That’s what this podcast episode is all about!

Diving into the Details:  Make Progress Not Perfection

I'm a firm believer in having a bias for action.  Tom Peters, in his book "In Search of Excellence", dives into this need for not letting things stall or delay but in being persistent in looking for ways to move things forward.  Those who have a tendency to try and perfect things often end up causing more damage than good.  For those with a high quality standard, our 85% is going to appear to the general masses as 100% awesome!  Read that again.

When we fine-tune things it often causes the death of things!  We frustrate others with delays, we micro-manage, and we miss fast moving opportunities.

Always be asking, what is the next near-term step we can take to move this forward.

I attended a leadership conference where Craig Groeschel (Craig Groeschel Leadership Podcast) spoke and he shared a powerful acronym he uses and I've adopted.  It's called GETMO, which stands for Good Enough To Move On.  We need to get things to that stage and let them go, publish them, launch it, take it live, whatever it means!  Don't delay it further, don't wait, call it good and move on!

GETMO is a posture with a bias for action that refuses to get stuck sweating out the final few details to ensure something is perfect.  Rather, it says "this is really solid, let's roll with it!"  Get things going, move them forward, publish them.

In my years of business experience I encounter business persons who get stuck in "wanting it to be the best" (translated means their best)" and what ends up happening is nothing or massive delays!

Understand that your B+ effort is really good and the world will be a better place for it to be known as opposed to not ever seeing it or waiting another year to see it with a few final improvements.

The world moves fast.  It waits for no perfectionist.  Take a GETMO perspective and make progress, not perfection!

Final Takeaway

Take some time and evaluate your life and leadership today!  Are you stuck in a holding pattern because of perfectionistic tendencies? Is it time to make progress and move something forward?

Why the Halftime theme Mike?

I’m an Indiana Hoosier native where basketball is the top sport. Every team heads to the locker room at halftime to evaluate the first half and create an updated plan for the second half. That plan includes adjustments based on reviewing what worked and what didn't. The “halftime” is a key review point where the game stops, the team pulls away to huddle in the locker room away from the fans, and they come out prepared and ready to succeed in the second half.

That’s what this podcast is all about, taking the time to pull away for a bit to evaluate, learn, and set some strategies for your business to succeed in the second half. Join me by subscribing and let me be your “business halftime” to help you find great success going forward!
