Barclays expands Anthropic Claude; 50% of devs by 2026

Barclays is expanding its strategic collaboration with Anthropic to integrate Claude AI across its global operations, accelerating software development, modernizing legacy systems, and improving operational efficiency. The British lender expects 50% of its software developers to be using Claude Code by the end of 2026 before broadening that further next year, with a majority of software engineers expected to use the tool in 2027.

The expanded collaboration, announced on October 1, covers software development, legacy modernization and operational workflows. This marks a significant escalation from earlier applications focused primarily on information retrieval and customer inquiry routing.
Claude Already Handling High-Volume Operations
Barclays’ markets business is already using Anthropic models to help streamline how client inquiries are processed and managed, with the platform handling approximately 120,000 emails each day. Claude helps classify, enrich, and route these emails in Barclays’ Global Markets business, reducing manual handling.

The bank’s Colleague Knowledge Assistant, live since 2025, has been adopted by more than 16,000 Barclays UK colleagues and handled over one million searches. The staff assistant helps employees search for information while supporting service for more than 20 million UK retail customers.

From Information Retrieval to Software Engineering
Craig Bright, group co-chief operating officer, said Barclays was moving towards AI embedded in how it builds, tests, secures and operates technology, extending Claude’s role from retrieving information and routing enquiries to helping engineers change the bank’s software.
The shift to Claude Code represents a transition from support functions to core engineering work. Rather than simply assisting staff with finding information or managing customer emails, the AI system will now play a direct role in software development and the modernization of the bank’s legacy technology infrastructure.

Security and Governance Framework
The bank applies security controls and human oversight across its AI use cases, although the announcement does not specify that every email receives human review. Barclays says governance, security controls and human oversight apply to its AI use cases.
Operating within a highly regulated banking environment, Barclays is implementing Claude in a manner designed to meet compliance requirements and risk management standards. The bank has not publicly detailed the specific security protocols or oversight mechanisms in place, but emphasized that appropriate controls govern the AI deployment.
Broader Industry Context
The Barclays announcement comes at a time when some major technology companies are reportedly reconsidering their internal use of Claude. Recent reports indicate that Meta and Microsoft have reduced employee access to Anthropic’s tools while promoting their own internal AI systems, though both companies continue to make Claude available to customers.
Barclays’ commitment to expanding Claude use across its developer population contrasts with this trend, suggesting that enterprises outside the tech sector may be evaluating AI coding tools through different strategic lenses. Financial institutions often lack the in-house AI development resources available to companies like Meta and Microsoft, potentially making third-party enterprise AI solutions more attractive.
Adoption Targets and Timeline
The bank has established clear milestones for Claude Code adoption but has not yet published specific metrics on productivity gains or efficiency improvements. The milestones track reach, not outcomes, focusing on the percentage of developers using the tool rather than measured reductions in development time or operational costs.
By the end of 2026, Barclays aims to have half its developer workforce actively using Claude Code. The following year, 2027, the target expands to encompass a majority of the bank’s software engineering staff. These adoption targets represent a phased rollout that allows the bank to scale the technology gradually while monitoring results and refining implementation.
