Barclays scales Anthropic’s Claude to developers

Barclays has deepened its partnership with Anthropic, expanding the use of Claude AI models across software development, banking operations, and customer support functions. The bank announced the expanded partnership on October 1, 2026, with a target of having Claude Code in use by half of its developer population by the close of 2026, and by a majority of software engineers during 2027.

The British universal bank is pushing Claude beyond pilot projects into core operational areas, including legacy system modernization, email triage, and employee knowledge retrieval. Claude helps classify, enrich, and route approximately 120,000 emails daily in Barclays’ Global Markets business, reducing the need for manual handling.

Scaling Developer Adoption
Barclays is making software development a central focus of the expanded Claude deployment. The bank previously used the AI assistant primarily for internal support tasks, but is now extending it to core engineering workflows. Craig Bright, group co-chief operating officer at Barclays, said in the announcement: “We’re moving towards AI as an increasingly agentic capability embedded within how we build, test, secure, and operate technology.”
The 50 percent adoption target by year-end represents a significant acceleration in enterprise AI integration within the financial services sector. The rollout sits inside a multi-year efficiency program at Barclays, with the bank targeting approximately £2 billion in savings over that period, with AI initiatives contributing part of that figure.
Current Claude Deployments
Barclays has already deployed Claude in multiple areas across the organization. The bank’s Colleague Knowledge Assistant is used by more than 16,000 Barclays UK employees and has handled over 1 million searches since 2025. The system helps staff find information while serving the bank’s more than 20 million UK retail customers.

In the Global Markets division, the bank uses Claude for Global Markets email triage, employee knowledge retrieval, and software development. The email classification system represents one of the largest production deployments, processing tens of thousands of client communications each day.
The bank applies security controls and human oversight across its AI use cases, although the announcement does not specify that every email receives human review. The bank emphasized governance frameworks and secure implementation as core elements of its AI strategy.
Broader AI Strategy
In early June, Barclays gave financial backing to CommonAI, a collaborative engineering platform designed to help early-stage startups, enterprises, and researchers access affordable AI infrastructure, enabling the organization to develop AI systems that can operate autonomously and safely in highly sensitive sectors like finance.
The Anthropic partnership forms part of a wider technology modernization initiative. Legacy system updates have become a priority as the bank works to improve operational efficiency and reduce technical debt across its global operations. The deployment of AI coding assistants aims to accelerate these efforts while maintaining security standards required in regulated financial services.

Ann Marie Darling, group co-chief operating officer at Barclays, said in the release that the expanded use of Claude at the bank will transform how work gets done and enable better outcomes.
