Figma launches AI agent in beta for designers

Figma has introduced an AI agent that lets users employ natural language text prompts to generate new designs, edit existing ones, or automate tasks such as generating iterations. Beginning May 20, 2026, Figma’s agent became the new entry point for First Draft functionality, offering a more powerful way to explore, iterate, and refine designs. The Figma agent is rolling out gradually in beta over the coming weeks, and AI credits will apply at general availability.

Figma has established partnerships with Anthropic and OpenAI to integrate AI command-line interface tools, such as Claude Code and Codex, into its design software. The move positions Figma as part of a broader shift toward AI-assisted workflows that bridge design and development, allowing teams to move faster from concept to implementation.

Agent Capabilities and Integration with Development Tools

The in-house AI agent enables users to employ natural language prompts to create new designs, modify existing ones, or automate design tasks within Figma’s collaborative canvas, and users can activate multiple AI agents to perform varying tasks simultaneously. The AI assistant is designed to comprehend design elements and contexts, utilizing models specifically fine-tuned for design applications.

Figma fits into agentic workflows by explaining key concepts like agents, MCP, skills, and write to canvas, walking through workflows that show how agentic tools can accelerate the design and development process, starting from either code or the Figma canvas. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that defines how agents communicate with other software like Figma, and MCP servers allow agents to retrieve relevant context from external sources.

New Features and Design Workflows

Figma’s 2026 AI updates now span content generation, image editing, smart search, UI drafting, code handoff, and full-site creation, with tools like Replace content, Make an image, First Draft, and Add interactions helping teams move faster through early ideation and prototyping. More advanced workflows, including Dev Mode, Code Connect, MCP server, and Figma Make, are designed to bridge design and engineering.

Figma Make is an AI-powered prototyping system that transforms written instructions into structured interactive experiences, allowing designers to describe behavior using natural language while Figma generates working logic inside the design file. Make introduces voice-to-text, question cards, version history, clear context, and a new Zapier connector to give builders more control and context while working in chat.

Revenue Growth and Market Competition

Despite concerns regarding AI potentially diminishing design jobs, Figma reported $333.4 million in revenue for the first quarter of 2026, marking a 46% increase from the previous year. The company faces competition from Canva, Adobe, Flora, Krea, and Dessn, and to bolster its position, Figma acquired the node-based design tool Weavy last year and has introduced new image-editing features.

“As building software gets easier, what matters most is setting direction: deciding what to work on, how it should function, what the experience should feel like,” stated Loredana Crisan, Figma’s chief design officer, emphasizing that teams can now collaborate with AI agents to visualize concepts and refine ideas while minimizing time spent on repetitive tasks.

Beta Rollout and Availability

The agent will be available for Full seat users on Professional, Organization, and Enterprise plans, with Collab and Dev seats able to use the agent in drafts, though Starter, Education, and Government plans are not included. Users can sign up to request early access, and if eligible and selected for the beta, Figma will send an email once they’re in.

Three workflows demonstrate how to use the Figma MCP server with agentic tools across different stages of design and development, including capturing running UI as design layers on the Figma canvas to elevate rough, code-generated designs into something structured and editable.
