Simmerring Installation Made Easy - This is How it Works!

The assembly of Simmerrings is not witchcraft, but there are still some things that you should pay attention to. With a few good tips, mounting the sealing ring succeeds without much effort. In addition, you don’t have to worry about damage due to poor installation. The following article provides valuable tips to ensure that the installation of the gaskets work properly.

Bevel the angle in advance

Before you can start the assembly, you have to make sure that the bore and shaft of the ring are clean. Dirt in the seal lip and shaft will lead to defects such as leakage. The inner diameter of the Simmerring must be expanded during assembly. It is important that the shaft is chamfered. The angle should be 30 to 50 degrees when the taper is chamfered. Mounting sleeves are used when the shaft of the ring has a keyway or grooved flange. One must also ensure that the mounting hole has a chamfer on the open side. This should be at least 1mm and 30 degrees. The edges should also be well-rounded so that installation is easy.

How to avoid damage to the sealing lip

Damage can be easily avoided. For example, you can wrap the Simmerring if it has to be pushed over a thread, the groove or other irregularities. For this purpose, it is best to use adhesive tape or paper that you soak in oil. Simmerrings can also be covered with a protective sleeve made of plastic or metal. In order for the ring to fit best, it must be regularly pressed into the bore. The best way to do this is to use an adapted pressure piece. This ensures that the pressure is evenly distributed over the part of the sealing ring.

You should also make sure that the sealing lip is facing the medium it is supposed to seal. This way, the sealing ring will work properly. The shaft and the shaft seal of the Simmerring must be well lubricated with oil or grease in advance. This facilitates sliding over the shaft. If a Simmerring with a sealing lip made of leather is used, it must be soaked in oil in advance.

Important do’s and don’ts

There are still a few general tips, which facilitate the assembly. The diameter of the thrust piece should not be too small, otherwise it can quickly happen that seals are damaged. It is important to use assembly tools to ensure that the sealing ring fits properly. This is also important for the next tip. Under no circumstances should the Simmerring be forcibly driven or pressed into the bore. This must be inserted carefully and, above all, evenly with a rubber mallet. If a sealing ring with a metal jacket is used, you can and should use some fastener at the same time. This also serves as a sealant for the ring at the same time. The lubricant on the shaft also has another advantage: greasing the seal makes the whole assembly easier.

There are still problems? This can be done

If the sealing ring rotates with the shaft, this is usually because the outer diameter of the seal is smaller than the inner diameter of the bore. In this case, the seal ring can be replaced with one of the correct size. It can also be that the mounted Simmerring sits crooked or looks deformed. Here you should check the size of the bore, because probably the inner diameter is too small. If there is a problem with the sealing lip itself, there can be several reasons. If the sealing lip is swollen, it is often due to an incorrect rubber composition. However, this can be easily replaced.
