How to Evolve your Business with Social Media

Evolve your Business with Social Media

Social media is one of the most useful, yet daunting platforms to showcase your business in the digital world. It has evolved from the do-it-yourself coding on Myspace into a new world of TikTok where the right video can generate 1 million+ views in just one day. Making sure your business evolves with social media is necessary for your survival. But don’t worry, we are going to show you how to do this in a few simple steps.

1. Find out where your target market is

There was once a time when social media was a ‘young person thing’. Fast forward to 2022 and even our grandparents have social media profiles. This doesn’t mean that you need to worry about your grandma on Snapchat; it means that different platforms now have different age demographics compared to ten years ago. However, finding out which platform your target market is using, is important in your quest for social media domination.

As a logo design agency, we needed a platform that could showcase our design portfolio. One where friends and colleagues could easily share things. The obvious choice for us was to advertise our services on Instagram. This is where the vast majority of graphic designers are since one singular post of a logo design project can produce thousands of comments, shares, and likes. As an image-sharing platform, business owners are most likely to search for #LogoDesignInspiration using Instagram over any other platform.

Since our target market is small to medium-sized businesses, we have a LinkedIn profile. This is in the hope of attracting the multitude of businesses active on that platform. Unfortunately, we have minimal engagement and a lack of substantial leads. Whilst you may assume LinkedIn is a great platform to find business owners as potential clients, it is limited to mostly large companies looking for longer-term projects. However, just like most things in social media, this will likely change in the next few years.

We again saw great success with Pinterest. We have an infographic on the Top Logo Design Trends of 2023. Pinterest users love this and regularly pin/share the infographic with their followers.

What we learned from our experience is that not every social media platform is suitable to reach your target market. Instead of creating a profile for every platform, we recommend focusing on the ones that will generate the most leads and build your authority in that space.

2. Learn how to create new types of content

If you can’t tell by now, social media is becoming more and more about quick videos and fast-moving images. Consumers are preferring to receive information in the form of visual content instead of text. We have witnessed big platforms adjust their features to meet this need, such as Facebook adding ‘stories’ and Instagram adding ‘reels’.

However, the most talked about social media platform right now is TikTok. This is a very divisive topic since most people find the idea of creating videos time-consuming and difficult. They either don’t know how to create a short video or don’t know what content to use. It might shock you to learn that despite being ‘creative people’ we also found this challenging at first. It presented a new question about how we wanted to display our brand, one that can be easily forgotten when you’re busy working on other people’s brands.

We used the opportunity of short videos to compare sketches of logo design concepts with the finished product. We were able to create this within the app as TikTok has great editing features that allow you to add filters and effects to customize your video. Alternatively, you can download free editing apps to create your video separately and then upload it to Instagram or TikTok.

If you’re not sure what content to use, you can start by answering common questions. This allows you to educate customers on your services/products.

3. Create a consistent social media image

Establish which platforms you are going to use and start to create new types of content. However, when you do this it is crucial that your tone of voice and graphic design are consistent. Whilst your business needs to stay up to date with social media trends, it’s important not to lose your identity in a sea of digital profiles.

If you spend enough time on these apps, you’ll notice that big companies are starting to become more personal online. They are spending more time and money creating a relatable brand for their business. They do this through videos, images, and comments. Some of the most viral content has been well-known brands posting hilariously unexpected comments on their customer’s posts. These pieces that make up their brand identity remain consistent on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and so on.

We have created a checklist that will help you ensure that you’re remaining consistent on social media:

  • Use the same logo design in your profile images.
  • Utilize the same banner images in different sizes for each platform.
  • Use the same symbols and typography.
  • Maintain the same tone of voice when responding to customers, posting captions, or speaking in videos.
  • Post similar content on each platform.

With all of this in mind, social media is nothing to be afraid of. It’s a new style of communicating to your customers that should be embraced. Use it as a chance to build on your brand and get more creative with your content. If you find that you don’t have the time, there are many resources available on how to grow your brand through digital marketing and digital marketing experts that you can hire.
