How to Evaluate Wedding Planners

How to Evaluate Wedding Planners

Your wedding day is a big deal. Probably one of the most important days of your life, if we’re being honest. And planning is a huge responsibility. While plenty of brides and grooms love to organize their own wedding, it can be immensely stressful. And, that's on top of the (totally understandable) excitement and stress that comes as a part of tying the knot.

From simple beach weddings to enormous parties in a mansion in the Hamptons, every wedding needs careful planning. This is where wedding planners come in. Hiring a wedding planner takes a lot of the stress of organization off your shoulders. They can help take care of vendors, entertainment, food, and everything else in between.

But how do you choose someone to plan your wedding for you? Giving up the responsibility and relying on someone else can be a stressful endeavor itself, which is the opposite of what you want. Luckily, there are a few tips and tricks out there for evaluating wedding planners and finding the perfect one for you.

So before you start planning your big day, whether it’s a dream cruise wedding, a traditional church affair, or an alternative humanist ceremony, take a look at some of our tips for choosing a wedding planner.

Know what you want

If you want to find someone who will organize the wedding of your dreams, you need to know exactly what that looks like first! Before you approach a wedding planner you should know your budget, how big the event is going to be, and what the event will look like. You should also figure out whether you want someone to plan every aspect of the big day for you or someone who will have more of a coordination role on the big day. There are wedding planners out there to suit everyone’s style, but you need to know what you want.

Interview a few options

Whatever you do, don’t just go for the first planner you meet. Make a shortlist and arrange a meeting with all of them. Prepare a few key interview questions. Ask about their problem-solving, their communication, what made them want to be a wedding planner, and so on. This will give you a good idea of whether they are a good fit.

Find out how they work

Do they prefer email or in-person meetings? Will they create inspiration boards or just talk you through swatches and samples? Are they incredibly detail-orientated or do they have a more broad-brush vision? These questions will ensure that you find the planner whose working style is most like yours. This can make sure that your working relationship goes smoothly!

Check their credentials

Most wedding planners will provide references, testimonials, and examples of previous events they have planned. They might even be a member of a wedding association of some sort or have professional certifications. Check all of these! Don’t be afraid to call up previous clients and ask about their work. If they have a list of happy couples singing their praises, then chances are they’ll be able to do a good job for you too.

Make sure you like them!

This might sound trivial, silly even, but in reality, it is super important. You are going to spend a lot of time together over a period of several months. Thus, it is really important that you get on well with your planner! A wedding is such a personal event to plan that your wedding planner really needs to be someone who gets you. Someone you like (and who likes you), who can therefore deliver a wedding that really speaks to your personality.

Choosing a wedding planner should be done carefully. Find the right one and you’ll end up with the wedding of your dreams. However, it will be without the stress and hassle of organizing it yourself!
