7 Cybersecurity Trends in 2023

Cybersecurity Trends in 2023

It's true that the year 2019 was a challenging year for everyone. The Pandemic, restrictions, digitalisation, mobile phones and the war only made it harder for companies to protect their data, users and stakeholders. Remote work made it possible for attackers to steal sensitive information and ruin the security posture of organisations. Even when using the latest practices, companies still have a risk of being hacked. That is why it is crucial for business owners to keep track of the latest cybersecurity trends to be well-prepared in 2023.

Ransom Cloud attacks

Ransomware attacks have successfully entered cloud environments as well. Malware and phishing emails are the most popular attack vectors for ransom-cloud attackers, where the key target is cloud-based mail servers such as Office 365 using methods like file sync piggybacking. This ransomware works as a harmless pop-up to the user.

While this attack presents like an engaging pop-up, when users click, the ransomware disseminates itself, providing a hacker with access to the network. And any time the user starts a file sync interaction using the cloud, the attacker will infiltrate the cloud environment. That is why it is best to use cybersecurity services and protect your users.

IoT threats

The Internet of things (IoT) has gained immense popularity over the last few years. IoT devices are extremely popular, making them an appealing target for hackers. Most commonly, these attacks happen when cybercriminals scan for vulnerabilities in devices and try to connect with non-standard ports.

Based on the MITRE ATT&CK framework, the hacker can either try to establish connections via ports that are not used or muddle using the protocol to bypass standard ports in the non-standard port technique. The Internet of medical things (IoMT for short) is a new trend for hackers since the healthcare industry is also a popular target. Also known as an IoT in healthcare, this network is made up of devices that can connect with IT systems in healthcare organisations.

Supply Chain Attacks

According to a recent survey by Anchore, almost 62% of organisations globally faced a supply chain attack last and this year. In this type of attack, hackers enter a company's networks by targeting vulnerabilities or compromised devices found in the network of a third party that is also part of the value chain.

Even though attacks that cost millions have forced companies to be more aware than before, hackers also develop their skills and use the latest technologies to still get needed access. It is essential for organisations to be proactive rather than react to all attacks, which will help them observe and consistently analyse user behaviour to immediately detect weird patterns or accesses.

Threats Against Operational Technology (OT)

Operational technology is made up of the software or hardware mechanisms that are designed to monitor and detect a change in industrial equipment, software, processes and other systems. The main elements of OT are Industrial control systems (ICS), and they have been shown to be the most appealing targets of cyber criminals in 2022 and seem to remain in 2023 as another of the important cybersecurity trends. With this type of attack, businesses should worry about physical damage rather than securing data.
