Add value. Be uncommon.

Decent terms, but what do they mean?  How can someone add value, be uncommon, and from these have longterm business success?

In this episode of the halftime Mike podcast I dive into my life and business philosophy based around these two terms.  It's a great opportunity to step back from the day-to-day tactics of marketing and reflect on the bigger picture of the "why" that drives the "what".

Add Value. Be Uncommon.

If you look at my logo, I specifically include these tag lines beneath my name.

It's about setting yourself apart and doing life and business in such a way that contributes to others and the higher good.  Why do it?  By "Adding Value" you can't go wrong in client relationships.  And by "Being Uncommon" you set yourself apart from the competition in grounded industries.

There will always be competition but you can differentiate your business and your brand by doing what many businesses don't....adding exceptional value and being uncommon.

This works in life and business.

I recently published a small journal with this very title.  It gives 11 different keys to living a life that adds value and is uncommon.  It's my way of breaking it down.  It is a journal, meaning I write a reflection for a chapter start, and then there are blank pages as the goal is that users reflect in an ongoing way with the concepts.

In this podcast episode I cover a number of the 11 topics in the journal.  Covered are the following:

Honor. Service. Effort.

It's not always about personal advancement.  We live in a "me first" culture that is stuck on itself and which needs to get a bigger picture of how longterm success happens.

It's about honoring others.  Every person has value.  By acting with honor towards each person we encounter, we add value.

Service is about looking for ways we can serve.  Rather than sitting on the sideline or waiting for others to serve you.  Jump in!  Find ways to contribute.  Find ways to volunteer.  Find ways to contribute to those that are less fortunate than you.

Effort is all about giving your best.  This is hustle.  This is working.  It's not about being complacent but being action-oriented and going after it.

Trials before Triumph

There will be trouble.  There will be trials.  Often times trials and failure are going to come before triumphs.  We've got to persevere and keep going.  We might be on the verge of breakthrough.

Don't quit.  Don't give in.  Don't back down.  There will be trouble.  Understand that and learn to endure and push forward.

GSD all the way!

My saying always is:  Get Stuff Done! G.S.D.!  It's about accomplishing things.  We've got to be finishers, not just workers.  We've got to accomplish things, not just be busy.  There's a difference!  Adding value to your business or employer and others means you help them get things done.  Be the one that finishes.

Excellence, not Perfection

Well begun is only half done.  The enemy of advancement is perfection.

Perfection is the cause of way too many delays and lack of innovations. Go for excellent and launch.  Do not wait for "perfect" because it won't happen.  Advancement is key and waiting for everything to be just right means you miss the moment far too often.  Strive for it to be excellent, but do not hold on for perfection.

Follow Through

Be someone that follows through.  Don't be one that needs to be reminded.  Be one that finishes well and is responsible.

Teflon works Wonders

We've got to be like Teflon.  This world will through us complaints and attacks that are not accurate and true.  We've got to led those slide off and not let them stick to us.  It's about discerning what is truth and what is an attack with no basis.

When an attack has no basis, learn to let it slide off like Teflon does in a pan!

You Win when Others Win

Learn this principle: By helping others achieve wins, you will win.  You build rapport, equity, and add value in tremendous ways when you contribute so that others win.

You might go faster alone, but you go further with others.  If you contribute to others, they will be ready to help you.  It starts with you.

Outside the Box

Innovation does not happen doing the same old routines.  It's about getting beyond the routine and thinking outside the box where true advancement happens.  Get creative.  Find that zone where you can get beyond the daily grind and think strategically and from a different perspective.

Why the Halftime theme Mike?

I’m an Indiana Hoosier native where basketball is the top sport. Every team heads to the locker room at halftime to evaluate the first half and create an updated plan for the second half. That plan includes adjustments based on reviewing what worked and what didn't. The “halftime” is a key review point where the game stops, the team pulls away to huddle in the locker room away from the fans, and they come out prepared and ready to succeed in the second half.

That’s what this podcast is all about, taking the time to pull away for a bit to evaluate, learn, and set some strategies for your business to succeed in the second half. Join me by subscribing and let me be your “business halftime” to help you find great success going forward!
